Karla Garza

Karla received her nickname, Papillina, sometimes called Papillita, when she was a child and called her Tia (aunt) Ofelia, Papilla.

Karla got her Bachelor’s in General Studies with a concentration in Art and Spanish from the University of Texas Pan-American. She now pursues a Master’s in Fine Arts from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. At the same time, she is currently a full-time administrator for a sister company from plants in Mexico.

Karla is a fine artist who works with various materials. In concentration in 2D, she works with watercolors, oils, acrylics, soft pastels, and pencils. She also works with polymer clay for most of her 3D sculptures.

Her works render a magical world of childhood memories with her family from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to references and current influences from Eastern Asia. It depicts self-identity, social construction, and spiritual exploration. Her goal is to find a middle ground where she embraces and relearns her ethnicity while learning from other cultures constantly infused in our daily lifestyles. In some words, remember the past while adapting to the current times.
